The AI-ready product data checklist
To be recommended by AI, run an Agentic Storefront, or sell through an agent, you need one thing: clean, machine-readable product data. Here is exactly what to include.
Whether you want to be recommended by ChatGPT, run your own Agentic Storefront, or sell through an agent, it all rests on the same thing: complete, machine-readable product data. Here's the practical checklist - what to include on every product, and why it matters.
1. Identity
- A descriptive name - specific enough to disambiguate ("Merino Wool Base Layer, Men's, Charcoal"), not just "Base Layer".
- A real description - a few substantive sentences an agent can quote. Thin, templated copy gives an assistant nothing to work with.
- Brand - explicitly stated, not implied by the logo.
2. Price and availability
- Price and currency, machine-readable in your
Productstructured data - not baked into an image. - Availability - in stock / out of stock, kept accurate. An agent that recommends an unavailable item burns trust fast.
3. Identifiers
- GTIN and/or MPN. Global identifiers are how agents and feeds match your product to the wider world, deduplicate it, and trust it. Missing identifiers are the most common reason a product is skipped or ranked lower.
4. Media
- Clear product images with real URLs (not lazy-loaded blobs an agent can't resolve). Multiple angles help.
5. Trust signals
- Reviews and ratings, exposed as structured data where genuine. They inform both ranking and the assistant's confidence in recommending you. Never fabricate them.
6. The feed and the map
- A clean product feed (Google Merchant, or an agent feed format) that mirrors the above for your whole catalog.
- A sitemap and llms.txt so assistants can find everything, not just the pages they stumble onto.
- Crawler access - confirm your robots.txt actually lets the AI bots in.
Copy this, then verify it
The shortest version: name, description, brand, price, currency, availability, GTIN/MPN, images, genuine reviews - in structured data, in a feed, reachable by crawlers. Once you've done a pass, don't take our word that it's right - run the product page through the free AI Product Checker and your feed through the Google Merchant Feed Checker. They'll tell you exactly what's missing.
