In-chat checkout: how conversations become orders
Most AI shopping experiences chat well, then hand the shopper off to a separate checkout and lose them. In-chat checkout removes the handoff.
Most "AI shopping" experiences do a great job right up until the moment of truth - then they hand the shopper off to a separate checkout and hope. In-chat checkout removes that handoff. It's the difference between an assistant that chats and one that sells.
The handoff problem
The traditional funnel is a relay race with a dropped baton at every exchange: discover on one page, add to cart on another, log in, enter address, choose shipping, pay. Each hop leaks conversions. A chat that recommends beautifully and then dumps the shopper into that same multi-step funnel has only moved the leak, not fixed it.
Why in-chat checkout converts
When the cart and the payment live inside the conversation, momentum is preserved. The shopper decided to buy while they were engaged and their questions were freshly answered - and they can act on that decision immediately, in the same place, without re-orienting to a new interface. Fewer steps, less context-switching, fewer reasons to abandon.
The best time to check out is the second the shopper says yes - not three pages later.
What it takes technically
In-chat checkout isn't a chat bubble glued onto a store. It needs a live tie to your real cart and inventory, a payment path through a trusted processor (Stripe and the like), and correct handling of tax, shipping and order creation so the order lands in your system exactly as a normal order would. Done right, the shopper experiences a conversation; your operations experience a standard order.
Trust and payments
Shoppers will only pay inside a chat if it feels safe. That means real payment infrastructure and familiar signals - recognised methods, clear pricing, a visible processor - not a bespoke form asking for card details. The payment step should look and feel like the secure checkout people already trust, just without the detour.
Where it's going
In-chat checkout on your own storefront is step one. The same capability is what lets agents complete purchases through emerging standards like the Agentic Commerce Protocol - the buy happens wherever the conversation is, on your terms. Either way, the principle holds: close the sale where the shopper is, the moment they're ready.
